Budget backpacking – 1 month in Asia daily cost

budget-backpack

4 weeks ago I flew to Asia for the 3rd time in my life. I’m 21, I’ve worked in an office for the last 3 years, saving money and following the pattern that humans are told we ‘should’. I got engaged, started looking for a home, looked after my niece and nephew, embraced my home and family whilst climbing the career ladder until I realised my dreams were different to those that society chooses.

Travel in your twenties, travel in your thirties AND your forties, hell… I don’t think I ever want to stop! Fill your life with adventures, it’s magical, eye opening and beautiful. Oh, and also… It’s extremely CHEAP!

“You mean living on an island in a beach hut drinking out of fresh coconuts and having a 3 course dinners every night can be cheaper than living at home?”

In this paradise the answer is yes.

Here is my budget breakdown after 1 month of travels…

Budget Top Tips –

  • Try not to catch tuk tuks/taxis outside your hostel. Walk to the town centre or main road and you will almost always find them cheaper – haggle as much as you can.
  • Always go for hostels with free breakfasts, they rarely cost more, are great for when you’re hungover and can just roll out of bed without having to wander for breakfast. The food is usually great, Eggs on toast and pancakes are very popular in Laos.
  • Embrace the lie ins, breakfast is usually served till 10 and in chilled out Asia things rarely open up before then anyway. I usually have 2 meals a day (free hostel breakfast and cheap dinner aka. Street/local food with a fruit shake as a snack in between). You save money on lunch and get more site seeing done!
  • Walk, walk then walk some more. Tuk Tuks can be very overpriced and walking is the best way to see your latest destination.
